Being in a fast moving high technology environment brings you into constant contact with unproven concepts that are supposedly “the next big thing”. In my opinion, Twitter (and microblogging for that matter) is another example of the next dud thing.

I don’t get it. At all. I’ve tried. I’ve “followed” people twittering. I find it to be akin to a barrage of meaningless Facebook status updates. It gets confusing quite quickly when you’re following someone having a conversation with someone that you’re not following (and why would I want to overhear a conversation anyway?). When you get the updates via SMS it’s even more distracting and annoying than normal, because you’re drawn to check your phone in case it’s a regular message.

This is why I was pleased to read Michelle Slatalla’s piece in the New York Times on her experience with Twitter and trying to get her family to use it. Turns out that not even early-adopter, technophile teenagers want to Twitter, just tech geeks.

I don’t see much chance that this will ever get mainstream traction. It’s safe to move on now. If you’re ever wondered how Google got it’s logo, then check out these slides of the Google logo options from Wired mag with comments by the creator of the logo.

I always find it amusing how graphic designers get esoteric with their creation explanations and describe what we supposedly identify subconsciously, as in logo one where, “The pattern here was used to visually imply that something goes on ad infinitum.”

BS or the truth? Probably a bit of both.

I’m a big fan of the TED conferences. I’ve subscribed to the weekly mailing list and love watching the videos of speakers at TED conferences presented their wild and woolly ideas in a supportive forum that doesn’t discount creativity.

Here’s a video of a talk at TED 2002 by Chris Anderson, just after he took over TED and it became a non-profit. In this talk he outlines his thinking for getting involved and what he wants TED to be in the future.

TED has come a long way since then.

I have two Staffies and anyone that’s been around them knows that they suffer from ADHD (Affection Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). I’ve had to learn how to blog in bed with one hand so that I can use the other to scratch Cinnamon at the same time. I tried the scratch-then-blog approach, but invariably had tan Staffie walking around on my keyboard, licking my face and doing her best interpretation of the Infinite Monkey Theorem.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that I’m a sucker for anything web2.k9 and I doubly enjoy a site that knows what it’s users really need, so I was chuffed that the geniuses at Valleywag hooked me up with this handy dandy canine screen cleaner while I was browsing through it’s top quality journalism :p

One has to wonder who is the bulldog at Microsoft? Mmm, not so sure that Steve Balmer would ever do something quite so self-effacing
